Throw a Great Fourth of July Party

Throw a Great Fourth of July Party

It’s your turn to host the Fourth of July party this year. The sun is shining and the clock is ticking. Will you be prepared to host your excited guests when the time arrives? It can be a stressful process. If you are ready for a little help, Jonny On It, the best home services provider app, can assist you from start to finish so you can enjoy the patriotic holiday in style.

There are a few things you’ll want to take care of before the big celebration.

Pre-Fourth of July Party

Fourth of July Party
  • The first challenge: junk. If your house isn’t full of it, your garage certainly is. Old furniture, broken electronics, and outdated appliances are just the start. Junk is unsightly and can be distracting to you and new visitors. Not only that, but it takes up space that could be better utilized at your party. Clear out the garage and open it up for more event space. A nice semi indoor cornhole area may be the perfect addition to your “newfound” garage this Fourth of July.
  • Once the junk is gone, it will be time to start organizing your important treasures. Marie Kondo makes it look easy, but organization can be a difficult task when you don’t know where to start. Getting organized can mean anything from pulling out the label maker to rearranging the furniture. Whatever the case, a professional can make a huge difference. Keep in mind you will need access to your decorations soon and finding them easily is half the battle. You’ll want your house to be straightened and neat so your decorations can sparkle. Make sure your home is also open and inviting for the crowds.
  • Having both your front and back lawn in tip-top shape is crucial for a successful Fourth of July Party. Don’t waste your time mowing the lawn or blowing the leaves when you could be enjoying your day off. Let someone else do it for you. A Jonny On It professional will tend to your flower beds and prune your shrubs. They can pull weeds, put down mulch and if that’s not enough, finish the job with a pressure wash. With a manicured yard, you’ll certainly impress your guests.

Post-Fourth of July Party

Post party clean up

If you’ve thrown your party correctly, you won’t be getting out of bed the next day. That’s okay, you don’t have to. All your post-party needs can be handled with the touch of a few buttons.

  • More than likely, drinks and crumbs were spilled on your carpet. And if by sheer luck you didn’t end up with any stains, people walking in and out all day certainly brought in footprints. Carpet cleaning can be a nightmare. Don’t resort to tireless soaking and scrubbing when you can get your carpet cleaned by a professional. It will be worth it to get a few more hours of sleep.
  • After any successful indoor/outdoor party it’s not a bad idea to check on your air conditioning unit. Having the door opened and closed consistently puts extra pressure on your unit to perform. Plus, there were more people than normal in your living room, raising the temperature and humidity. A broken or stressed AC unit is the last thing you need in the middle of the summer. Call a professional to check up on things so you can continue living comfortably.
  • Hot dogs, burgers, and coleslaw is just the start of it when it comes to food. A Fourth of July party requires a lot of grub. You probably used nearly every appliance in your house to prepare for this party. If your gas stove gave out or your garbage disposal was abused, don’t worry. Jonny On It has appliance repair pros to take care of any and all needs.

Future Parties

Being the host with the most doesn’t have to be daunting when there is a professional to help you each step of the way. Party planning is no easy task but it is easily put off. If you haven’t figured out every detail by now, you may want to tap a few buttons on your smartphone and save yourself some trouble. Once they experience your perfect Fourth of July party, all of your neighbors will be raving about your party throwing skills. When you discover how easy things can be, you’ll be using Jonny On It for before and after every party.

Hire a Professional This Father’s Day & Keep Dad Off the Ladder

Hire a Professional, Keep Dad Off the Ladder

Father’s Day is just around the corner (June 16 to be exact). This year, avoid a last-minute gift. Buy Dad a Jonny On It gift card so he can assign a professional to knock out one of his handy-man tasks. After a simple app download and the touch of a few buttons, Dad can turn his “honey-do” list into a “honey-done” list. Whether it’s cleaning the mold off a bathroom ceiling or painting the exterior of your house, make sure the only steps Dad climbs today are to get out of the pool for another beer. Here are a few ways Dad can use his gift card.

Keep Dad Off The Roof

Roof Project

Has Dad been talking about taking on a new roofing project recently? If so, relieve him of his overly ambitious plans and let a professional take care of things. It’s important to tackle roofing problems before they occur. Don’t wait for a leak or storm to call attention to the roof. Fall is typically the prime time for roof work, but it can often take up to a month for a contractor to get to your home. Early summer can be a great alternative for roof installation because the roofing companies are generally less busy and offer better rates. Beat the busy season and tell Dad to use his new gift card to hire a professional in advance. Today is not the day for a broken leg, Dad.

Keep Dad From Painting

Dad painting

Exterior home painting should never be a haphazard job. Because rain affects the success of the paint drying, it’s important to plan ahead and consider the weather patterns. Contrary to popular belief, you can paint straight through the pollen season. Acrylic paint dries so quickly, that the pollen falling does not have any negative effects on drying consistency. The best times to paint are during mild, dry days. Because Atlanta is humid, you should paint before the summer gets into full swing, or wait until things cool off. Although this project can be “DIY’d”, experienced painters are more efficient and can tackle the job with ease. If Dad takes on this task alone, it might end up being an endless job that never gets completed. Cut Dad some slack and hire a professional.

Keep Dad Away From the Vents

Air Vents

If you see Dad precariously perched on a ladder cleaning the air vents, tell him to come down before he hurts himself. Keeping your air vents clean can save you from spending money on repair jobs. However, keep in mind that this is not a simple job for the untrained. Hire a highly skilled professional to clean coils, humidifiers, and other hard-to-reach places. They will remove pollen, dust, vermin and other particles from your air vents. Clogged ducts can “restrict airflow and lead to the growth of mold.” Don’t make it Dad’s job to clean the grit and grime, it’s Father’s Day after all.

Keep Dad Far From Mold

Moldy sink

Mold is potentially dangerous and can be found anywhere condensation has built up. Common causes are leaks and flooding, while common locations are ceilings in bathrooms and kitchens. Removal of large infestations of mold can be a complicated process. It involves certain safeguards such as respirators, goggles, and gloves. Abating mold can be tricky. You risk airborne spores contaminating other parts of your house. If you ask me, it sounds like no day at the park for Dad. Eliminate the risk by hiring someone experienced to follow the correct precautions and protocol for you.

Keep Dad Out of the Garage

Even if Dad is a competent handyman, he certainly should not take on replacing the garage door. It’s important to maintain and potentially replace the garage door every so often for safety and general functionality. However, this requires a high skill level and is not a single-person task. Garage door inspection should be done annually. Remember, it is probably the largest piece of moving equipment in your house. Encourage Dad to become informed about garage door maintenance and tell him to get off that ladder.

Save Dad and Hire a Professional

Don’t fall back on the typical tie purchase this year. Give Dad the gift of relaxation. With prices ranging from $25 to $250, a Jonny On It gift card will ensure that highly skilled, vetted and insured professionals take on his handyman job. Exceed Dad’s expectations this Father’s Day and put Jonny On It.

The Jonny Pro Series – Pest Control

pro series - Pest Control
Greg Holley | Zone Home Solutions

Greg Holley worked in the pest control business just three and a half years before becoming a general manager. He had always dreamed of opening his own company, and in 1996 Greg saw the opportunity. Greg moved from the southern town of Dublin, Georgia, to the booming city of North Atlanta where he created Zone Pest Control.

Early on, Greg decided that he wanted his company to be a place where his employees could find a good career path and stick around to build long-relationships with their customers. You can hear the pride in his voice when he talks about his team.

“My guys are problem solvers. They know and understand what the homeowner needs because they consistently show up to that home. Some of my guys have been working at the same house for so long that they’ve seen a kid start kindergarten and then seen that same kid pack his bags for college.”

One of his favorite days of the month is the second Tuesday, when his team comes together for a meal, to network, and to solve problems.

Greg might run a Pest Control and HVAC company, but his primary motivation is people.

“People call us because they have a problem and then we get to go in and find the solution. That’s our motto, where problems meet solutions.”

Strange Encounters

Over the years, Greg has come across more strange encounters than he cares to remember. Let’s just say that Greg could probably start a side gig consulting on horror films.

He did have one encounter with bed bugs that left him scratching his head (thankfully, not from the bugs). A certain fraternity house at Georgia Tech had acquired a new sofa on a college budget (free from off the curb). Apparently, the guys were pretty attached to the sofa but it had one problem: it was full of bed bugs. Greg came for a visit and treated not only the sofa but the entire house. However, word got to one of the boy’s moms about the sofa and it “mysteriously” disappeared.

The Science Behind Pest Control

One of the most fascinating things Greg shared with us was how different bugs are treated. For example, if you have an ant problem, a good pest control company will be able to identify the type of ant and use a solution targeted at that species. Help your pest control provider by taking a picture of any of the little guys you find roaming around your house. Greg regularly has customers sending him photos. Before the days of smartphones, people actually sent him dead bugs. Greg and his technicians are trained to identify different types of pest. He even keeps a microscope on his desk and an entomologist on retainer.

The good news is that because solutions are targeted to eliminate specific pests, the sprays aren’t harmful to pets, children, or anyone else who may encounter them.

  • Always clean your dishes before going to bed. Most pests are sugar feeders or protein feeders, both of which are readily available on dirty dishes.
  • Keep tree limbs and bushes out of contact with the house. Pest control creates a barrier around the house but a limb that brushes up against the house provides the perfect workaround for determined pests.
  • Always check items that you bring into your home. Pests will frequently enter a treated home through an outside source such as packages or potted plants.

DIY Don’ts

  • Don’t leave pet food out overnight. Pet food is primarily made up of protein so those protein-loving pests will feast on Fluffy’s food while you sleep.
  • Leave the chemicals to the experts. Over-the-counter chemicals can be harmful to humans and animals.
  • Live animals often carry diseases, never try to remove them by yourself.
